Music Curriculum

Our music curriculum is informed by the Model Music Curriculum (March 2021) and provides a well-rounded learning experience for all students. Students have the opportunity to develop their musical skills through:

● Classroom Performance: Key Stage three classes participate in ensemble singing and learn to play the piano. Students perform regularly individually and in small groups for assessment purposes.

● Instrumental Instruction: Students in Years 7-9 have the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments including ukulele, guitar, drums, percussion, and piano. In Key Stage 3, students also learn to perform a piece by a great composer such as Beethoven.

● Ensembles: We offer a variety of ensembles for students to participate in, including Steelpan Group, Wind Band, Choir, School Show Band, and String Ensemble.

Enfield Music Service Partnership

Winchmore School is proud to partner with the Enfield Music Service to expand our music offerings. Enfield Music Service provides:

  • Individual and Group Instrument Tuition: Individual and small group lessons are available for a wide range of instruments which can be found on the Enfield Music Store website by clicking here.
  • Large Group Ensembles and Clubs: Students can join the School Choir, Steelpan Group, Guitar Club, Piano Club, Music Production Club, KS3 Band, School Show Band, String Ensemble, or Woodwind Ensemble – all free of charge.

Extra-Curricular Activities and Support

Winchmore School is committed to fostering a love of music in all students. We offer a variety of opportunities to develop musical skills outside of the classroom:

  • Free Group Instrument Lessons: We provide free group instrument lessons (for 2 students) to students who meet specific criteria (Pupil Premium, Free School Meals, Looked After Children, Special Education Needs & Disability, Children with an Education Health Care Plan).
  • Rehearsal Space and Resources: Students have access to 10 rehearsal spaces during lunchtimes and dedicated after-school band rehearsals. We also provide all music students learning an instrument with access to MuseScore, an online platform with video lessons, play-along tracks, and sheet music.
  • Performance Opportunities: Students participate in our whole School Musical Production or at our award ceremonies and various in-school events. They will also have the opportunity to perform in competitions and concerts organized by the Enfield Music Service. We regularly have providers visit such as the National Youth Orchestra who lead workshops for our students these are subsidised and free for students
  • Financial Support: We may be able to offer financial assistance for school trips, workshops, and instrument tuition fees.
  • Musical Experiences: We attend a minimum of 4 trips per school year to see live music. This often includes The Royal Opera House, Whole School Musical Productions, and live performances at the Royal Albert Hall.

Musical Experience

Throughout the year, we offer various opportunities for our students to experience music. We go on school trips to see live music a minimum of 4 times per year. There is a live performance each term, which usually takes place during our achievement assemblies, or we host visiting performers such as Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music or a local choir. Additionally, we regularly attend the Royal Albert Hall to see Future Makers, and we ensure that students have the chance to see a musical each year.

School trips are usually booked through ParentPay, while tickets for in-school events such as the school show are booked through a third-party platform. Financial support may be available for eligible students to help cover trip costs. We frequently have providers visit, such as the National Youth Orchestra, who lead workshops for our students. These workshops are usually subsidised or free for students.

In collaboration with Enfield Music Service, we offer opportunities for students to participate in competitions and concerts arranged by the borough.

Looking Ahead

Winchmore School is committed to continuous improvement in our music program. Here are some of our exciting future plans:

  • Jazz Ensemble: We are working with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Enfield Music Service to develop a Jazz Ensemble program that will be open to students from surrounding schools.
  • Technology Investment: We are actively seeking to invest in new classroom music technology to enhance the learning experience.
  • Wind Band Expansion: We are planning to expand our Woodwind Ensemble into a Wind Band by incorporating brass instruments.
  • Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme: We intend to enrol in the assisted instrument purchase scheme to offer students a 20% discount on instruments.
