Within the Technology Faculty, we provide pupils with the essential foundation skills that will benefit them in the future, both in and out of school. The aim of the design technology curriculum is to enhance and strengthen pupil’s creativity and have a positive impact on their personal development, technical understanding and skills needed to perform daily tasks confidently. Such as preparing nutritious meals, hand sewing and using a hand saw. Our curriculum is designed to support our diverse range of students and their individual needs whilst allowing them to achieve the best outcomes possible. We are committed to developing literacy skills for all of our diverse learners.

HOSPITALITY AND CATERING KS4 

We aim to provide all of our learners in our diverse school community with consistently outstanding opportunities to progress in learning about Hospitality and catering in a way that is engaging and relevant and broadens horizons. We deliver our lessons in a focused and supportive atmosphere in which all learners are challenged and encouraged to be the best they can be.  We encourage the development of high skills and resilience in a safe environment, allowing students to demonstrate commitment and act on feedback. Hospitality and Catering equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for them to progress to employment in this sector. It encourages students to have knowledge of issues related to nutrition and food safety and how they affect successful hospitality and catering operations. They will also develop some food preparation and cooking skills as well as important transferable skills of problem-solving, organisation and time management, planning and communication essential in the workplace.

We aim for all students to develop knowledge, enquiry skills and critical thinking, using evidence to make good substantiated decisions and justifying their own opinions. We aim for all students to progress in literacy, numeracy and understanding of concepts in hospitality and catering throughout each year of study.

PRODUCT DESIGN

We aim to provide all of our learners in our diverse school community with consistently outstanding opportunities to progress in learning about Product Design in a way that is engaging and relevant and broadens horizons.

All the lessons are delivered in a manner that is designed to be a creative space to allow the learner to explore their imagination and give them the confidence to design and create products from the initial concept to the final prototype.

We make students aware of ‘real world design’ by teaching them current manufacturing processes and technologies and the history of different Design Movements and how they have influenced and shaped the world around us.

Students will learn a range of practical skills such as woodwork, basic metal and plastic forming processes which in turn will provide them with a solid foundation to work independently and safely in a Design Technology workshop environment.

The students will also do extensive work using CAD (Computer-aided Design). In order to enhance the aesthetics of their design portfolio and develop their design skills and in conjunction with this students will also have access to CAM (Computer-aided Manufacture) such as laser cutters and 3D printers to produce high-quality artefacts and working prototypes.

FASHION & TEXTILES

We aim to provide all of our learners in our diverse school community with consistently outstanding opportunities to progress in learning about Textiles in a way that is engaging and relevant and broadens horizons.

We deliver our lessons in a focused and supportive atmosphere in which all learners are challenged and encouraged to be the best they can be. We particularly value the use of relevant real-world examples in our teaching. All students will have the opportunity to learn about the design process and they will be given projects that are current and relevant to the fashion industry. Outside of the classroom they will be encouraged to visit fashion, textiles and art exhibitions, visits into central London to look at architecture and landmark clothing shops. We attend Graduate Fashion Week every year to see the fashion shows and give students an insight into progression routes and future opportunities. Students study factors on sustainability and future trends to help them to design fashion forward collections. They will also learn about modelling on the stand and pattern cutting skills to turn their designs into clothing. We aim for all students to develop knowledge, enquiry skills and critical thinking, using evidence to make good substantiated decisions and justifying their own opinions. We aim for all students to progress in literacy, numeracy and understanding of concepts in Fashion throughout each year of study.

ART

Here at Winchmore school we offer a broad experience of the Arts. Students begin their journey in KS3 where they learn to develop ideas and outcomes, experiment with materials and techniques, and are introduced to knowledge and concepts which challenge their thinking. As they progress through the key stages, students learn to build upon and enhance these skills to a mastery level before ending their journey in KS5 as young artists, photographers and designers, ready to enter the creative industry and beyond.

To reflect our world and environments, we focus on diversity. Students are taught to draw inspiration from a breadth of artists from different cultures, time periods, and styles in order to ignite their creativity. Diversity comes in many different forms, so here at Winchmore School we ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, get an Arts education tailored to their individual needs, where adaptive teaching, challenge and extension is designed to support the best possible outcomes for all.

We encourage our students to learn about the world that we live in and how to use their visual, written and spoken language to communicate their opinions and ideas. Literacy strategies have been developed to support our students with their critical analysis and oracy based tasks, these are transferable skills that they can take with them into any future career. 

With access to digital and printing technology, students in KS4 and 5 are able to explore disciplines additional to Art and Design, as we offer Digital Art and Photography courses too. 

Cutural capital plays a key role in the learning and enjoyment of the Arts, and we ensure that all students across the key stages have the opportunity to experience Art beyond the classroom. 

The Art Department at Winchmore School is an exciting, inspiring space, where students have the freedom to evolve their creativity through the development of their practical skills, critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving and conceptual understanding.
