We aim to provide all of our learners in our richly diverse school community with consistent, high-quality opportunities to progress in learning about the world. We aim to do this in a way which is engaging and relevant and broadens horizons. We deliver our lessons in a focused and supportive atmosphere in which all learners are challenged and encouraged to be the best they can be. We particularly value the use of relevant real world examples in our teaching, and learning opportunities outside of the classroom (field trips). All students will have the opportunity to learn about people and places that are different to their own experiences. Students study issues that are important to the modern world and the world of the future. We recognise that students have different starting points and adapt our teaching to meet their needs. We aim for all students to develop in knowledge, enquiry skills and critical thinking, using evidence to make good substantiated decisions and justifying their own opinions. We aim for all students to progress in literacy, numeracy and subject specific skills throughout each year of study.

KEY STAGE 5

HISTORY

The purpose of the history curriculum at Winchmore School is to fire pupils’ curiosity to ask questions and know more about Britain’s past and that of the wider world.  Pupils should be encouraged to develop a chronological framework of British history that will enable them to make sense of the new knowledge they acquire through enquiry-based study.  This will also allow them to understand the process of change, to see how we arrived ‘here’ and help them to make sense of the present.  We want pupils to recognise how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.  Moreover, we want pupils to realise that the past is gone and history is constructed and contested.  History’s unique concepts help pupils to construct arguments and support them to become analytical citizens who can question human motivation and society with skill and confidence.  The subject of history also helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of our time.  At Winchmore School we also aim to provide all of our learners in our diverse school community with opportunities to progress in learning about the past in a way which is engaging and relevant and broadens understanding.  We aim for all students to progress in literacy, numeracy and source analysis skills throughout each year of study.

We aim to provide all of our learners in our diverse school community with consistently outstanding opportunities to progress in learning about, and from philosophy, religion and ethics, alongside those of various worldviews, both secular and religious, faith and non- faith. Our aim is to do this in a way which is inclusive, engaging, relevant and which enriches the lives of our students. Students study issues that are integral and related to the modern world and the world of the future, as well as studying topics of a sensitive and controversial nature which will assist in their personal, social, moral and cultural growth. We promote a love of learning, inspire and motivate our students whilst developing their literacy and numeracy skills, knowledge and understanding, critical analysis, justification of opinions and the ability to challenge others and to respond to being challenged in a respectful and tolerant manner.
